Jack White - Brixton Academy

Went with Kimbo, Rach, and Nick to the much anticipated Jack White solo show at Brixton Academy.
Although promoting his new (and first solo) album ‘Blunderbuss’ – it was refreshing White had no qualms about generously reaching into his entire back catalogue. So it was a real Jack White’s Greatest Hits show, including material from his myriad of bands White Stripes, Raconteurs and Dead Weather songs – and even included one of the songs White provided guest vocals for the Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi project ‘Rome’.
As some folks might be aware – Jack White currently has 2 backing bands he utilizes on tour; with some kind of random selection deciding if he uses the all-girl or all-guy groups. Tonight was the all-guy group The Buzzards – a combo comprised on drums, keyboards, double-bass, pedal steel, and a 2nd guitarist – which led to a very rock-orientated show.
Things started with a great version of The White Stripes “Black Math” before moving onto a few selections from ‘Blunderbuss’. The tone took a more relaxed country vibe for The Raconteurs “Top Yourself” and The White Stripes “Hotel Yorba” which had probably the biggest crowd singalong of the night.
White switched to piano for a few keyboard heavy songs, including a fantastic reworking of The White Stripes “Dead Leavs and the Dirty Ground” which featured some fantastic Hammond-like organ blasts.
The White Stripes “We’re Going To Be Friends” was delivered almost solo acoustic, and quickly followed by a couple of my favourite songs from ‘Blunderbuss’, the title track and “Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy”. Main set closed with a spectacular “Ball and Biscuit” which had White flailing across the stage.
The encore kicked off with my favourite ‘Blunderbuss’ track “Sixteen Saltines” before launching into The White Stripes “Hardest Button to Button” which was incredibly well received by the capacity crowd. Things closed on a more mellow note with “Take Me With You When You Go”
